When the empire shattered, LongShadow was just one of many isolated communities. Lady Thea and the other remaining leaders, fell quickly to the curse but the hearty townsfolk defeated the resulting undead, sealing the remnant forces in the Tomb of the Patriarchs. The castle was hastily looted, locked and abandoned. Soon after the fall, trade continued between the leaderless townsfolk and the other nearby races. Contact with towns and cities further west continued. And life went on. In the early years a few leaders rose to control LongShadow and reopen the castle, but each leader and all his minions fell to the curse, dying and rising again as undead of various types. To protect themselves the people of LongShadow looked to the guilds. The guilds formed a council of equals to oversee and advise. The council had no leaders and could only recommend solutions but their recommendations seemed to have the force of law as most followed. Over time the council became known as “The Greybeards”, despite having many younger members and the occasional woman.

Contact between to the west began to weaken. Several incidents of theft and mysterious death caused even local trade between LongShadow, Greilea and SilverSlag to slow. Three years after the fall the last message of the old empire finally arrived, carried by a young paladin of the Lion’s Mane—An edict issued by the minor functionary of the King Hargouth’s court. In it was a series of recommended laws. The Graybeards met and further recommended to the people the laws be adopted. The young paladin, Goerlin Trellius, settled into the town and trained a local militia to defend the town from incursions. His training was voluntary; at first he had few students….
